Heartbreak, Banjo and a Lot of Personality
If you watched the video above before reading this, you probably already have a pretty good idea of Alexandra Datman’s personality. “The Liquor and The Girl” is colourful, playful and a little quirky, and Alexandra clearly knows what she wants her artistic world to look like.
Released independently as her third single, the song was created with collaborators Boucle D’Or and Filip Woja. It’s a country-pop girl anthem about choosing yourself over a partner who enjoys partying a little too much. There’s heartbreak in the story, but Alexandra approaches it with humour rather than turning it into something heavy. The banjo adds a fun country touch, while the catchy melody keeps the track surprisingly close to mainstream pop.
For me, though, the video is the best part of this release. There’s dancing, movement and a real sense of life in it. Alexandra’s visual identity comes through immediately, and the whole thing is simply entertaining to watch. I actually finished the video in a better mood than I started.
Her background in musical theatre makes a lot of sense here. She knows how to perform a character, but it doesn’t feel like she is playing someone else. The retro styling, humour and slightly eccentric pop sound all seem to belong to the same person.
“The Liquor and The Girl” is catchy on its own, but together with the video it becomes much more memorable.
