A Romantic Ballad from Another Time
"Love Me Now” by Tom Morfitt-White has an old-fashioned charm that feels quite refreshing. Built around piano, guitars and a beautiful clean vocal, it follows the familiar shape of a classic ballad and doesn’t try to overcomplicate it.
The song is the debut single from the young Australian singer-songwriter, who travelled to London to record with producer Magill Lamarre at Tileyard Studios. For a first release, Tom already sounds very comfortable behind the microphone. His voice is clear and controlled, but never feels like he is trying to prove how much he can do with it. He simply sings the song, and that works especially well here.
I also like how much space there is in the arrangement. The piano and guitars gently support the vocal instead of competing with it, keeping everything soft and intimate.
And then there’s the video. Tom appears in period-inspired clothing, writing a letter by candlelight in a setting that feels almost medieval. I wasn’t expecting that visual direction, but it fits the music beautifully. Suddenly the love song feels as though it has slipped into another century for a few minutes.
That combination is probably what stayed with me most. “Love Me Now” is simple in its approach, beautifully sung and polished without losing its softness. A very graceful first introduction to Tom Morfitt-White.
